SPS Announces www.NauticalCharts.gov Wins The 2001
Excellence.gov Award
Arlington, VA, February 12, 2001 – Software Performance
Systems, Inc. (SPS) announced today that www.NauticalCharts.gov was one of five
grand prizewinners of the 2001 Excellence.gov award. Alan Balutis of the
Federal CIO Council presented the 1st Annual Excellence.gov awards, which were
selected from hundreds of entries to the competition. Candidate programs
were judged according to their affects on government transformation, innovation
and results, collaboration, ease of use, public availability, privacy and
security, and cost-effectiveness. The Federal CIO Council, the Council
for Excellence in Government, the Industry Advisory Council, and e-Gov jointly
sponsored the awards.
SPS developed and deployed the site for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), Office of Coast Survey (OCS) from a grant from the IT
Innovation Fund. Mr. Dave Enabnit, Technical Director of OCS led the NOAA
team.
Prior to system deployment, "Nautical Charts had been printed in large
batches through an expensive lithographic process, then placed in
inventory. When ordered, charts could be several years old. Because
waterways are dynamic, many charts were out-of-date when ordered, and had to be
updated by hand. It was also expensive to keep inventory, and wastage was
high,” said SPS Strategic Solutions Vice President Joe
Linza. "NOAA's Office of Coast Survey has enabled a Print-On-Demand
capability for charts, accessed through the www.NauticalCharts.gov B2G2B
Internet exchange. Charts are now printed with up-to-the minute
accuracy. And since charts are only printed when ordered, inventory costs
for chart agents and the Government are kept to a minimum.”
