SPS Announces www.NauticalCharts.gov Wins The 2001 Pioneer AwardArlington, VA, May 25, 2001 – Software Performance Systems, Inc. (SPS) announced today that www.NauticalCharts.gov is the recipient of the 2001 Pioneer Award chosen by E-Gov's Government Solutions Center (GSC). Winners were selected for their significant impacts on how Government conducts business in the Information Age. In recognition, SPSwill also deliver a "Best Practice Briefing" at the E-Gov 2001 Exposition, July 10th - 11th. The 2001 E-Gov Pioneer Award was granted to only 20 government agencies out of nearly 300 initial nominations from federal, state, and local government organizations, as well as international submissions. Selection criteria for the award included systems that: "increased productivity, saved limited public resources, and improved the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of citizen services.” (E-Gov 2001). This is the second of two recent and national-level awards won by NauticalCharts.gov. The web-based system had made news in February by winning the 2001 Excellence.gov Award presented by the Federal CIO Council. SPS developed and deployed the www.NauticalCharts.gov web site for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Coast Survey (OCS) from a grant from the IT Innovation Fund. Mr. Dave Enabnit, Technical Director of OCS led the NOAA team. SPS Strategic Solutions Vice President, Joe Linza said prior to system deployment, "Nautical Charts had been printed in large batches through an expensive lithographic process, then placed in inventory. When ordered, charts could be several years old. Because waterways are dynamic, many charts were out-of-date when ordered, and had to be updated by hand. It was also expensive to keep inventory, and wastage was high. NOAA's Office of Coast Survey has enabled a Print-On-Demand capability for charts, accessed through the www.NauticalCharts.gov B2G2B Internet exchange. Charts are now printed with up-to-the minute accuracy. And since charts are only printed when ordered, inventory costs for chart agents and the Government are kept to a minimum.” About SPSAbout SPS Contact Information |
